Tigris Foundation의 간사인 Michiel Hotte 가 2월 4일-8일까지 서울에 온답니다. 관심사는 러시아 수렵단체로부터 사들인 임산물의 판로이구요..러시아에서는 각 수렵단체들이 자신들의 엽장을 관리하고 있는 것으로 알고 있습니다. 일부 단체는 밀렵을 방지하고, 겨울에 인공급여를 함으로써 사슴 개체군을 잘 관리하고 있고, 결국 그런 단체의 엽장에는 호랑이/표범 밀도가 자연보호구의 그것과 맞먹는다고 합니다.
Michiel Hotte 의 관심은 WCS와 같은 환경단체가 이러한 수렵단체들로부터 임산물을 사들여 그들에게 사슴/호랑이 보호의 경제적 인센티브를 주겠다는 것입니다. 그리고 임산물의 판로는 한국으로 생각하고 있구요...
국내의 수렵인들이 이러한 러시아 수렵단체들과 연계하여 호랑이/표범 보전에 나설수는 없을까요?
제 생각은 이렇습니다.
국내수렵인들이 hunting club을 조직한다. - 회원들로부터 일정한 요금을 거두어 연계를 맺은 러시아 수렵단체에게 재정지원을 한다 - 겨울에 러시아로 사냥을 간다.(속초에서 배를 타면 절반 가격에 갈수 있습니다.) - 호랑이 발자국이 널려 있는 곳에서 멧돼지와 사슴을 사냥한다....
한번 해볼만한 시도라고 생각하는에 여러분 생각은 어떠신가요?

I hope you are fine! I learned that Korean filmers are indeed in Lazov. But I did not speak to them yet.
I will be in Seoul from February 4th to 8th to get new visa for Russia.
In Seoul I want to collect information on forest products, such as: forest nuts, berries, herbal tea, mushrooms, forest medicine plants, honey. I will explain why I am interested in these products. In Russia my conservation partner WCS works with hunting organisations that are good to tigers and leopards. Some hunting organisations manage deer population very well (they protect their forest from poachers). In winter, they feed the deer. As a result the number of deer grows. When these hunters do not kill tigers and leopards, then large numbers of tigers and leopards live in the forests of the hunting organisation. WCS counts of tigers and leopards show that sometimes tiger and leopard population in the forest of a good hunting organisation is the same as in reserve/zapavednik !
Unfortunately, the hunting organisations have financial problems. They sell hunting permits to hunters, but the money they receive is not enough to pay for costs, such as protection of their forest against poachers. Therefore we want to help them to earn some money. We want to do this by helping them to sell forest products from their forest. When this is a success, then other hunting organisations (that do not protect tigers and leopards well yet) will also want to sell prducts to us. We can then say that we only buy from them, if WCS counts prove that the tiger and leopard population is growing in their forest. In this way, we can change behaviour of the hunters, so that they stop killing tigers and leopards, and do not kill too many deer.
When I am in Korea I want to learn if the forest products from the Russian hunters can be sold in Korea. Questions that I have are:
- which forest products are sold in Korea? How much do the products cost?
- which Korean companies import and sell the forest products?
- from which countries do the products come? From which foreign traders do Korean companies buy the products?
- are the Korean companies interested in products from the Russian hunting organisations?
- who is a good, English speaking trade partner for us?
Cho, do you know a person in Seoul, who likes nature and tigers, and wants to help me to find this information in Seoul?
I attached a picture of a tiger made in the new Hunchun reserve in China a few days ago. The tiger killed a mule and the picture was made with a camera-trap when the tiger came back to eat again. It is maybe the first picture of a living, wild tiger in China! The camera-trap was given to Hunchun reserve by WCS.
